Question: Incoherent communications as sign of mental confusion in the withdrawal stage of meth use?
(Posted by: Worried friend on 2008-11-02 00:50:26)
One of my closest friends who was never a user before just started working in a bar where it's known that there is a higher incidence of meth use among its staff. I started to notice strange things and changes about her. Since I can't see her frequently lately, it's only with text messages where we can communicate. Lately, I found all of her text messages to me incoherent and I have to think very carefully and try to guess what she's trying to say. She was not like this before. Today I went to her house and talked to her briefly. She looked fine and definitely not drunk or intoxicated but somehow looked drowsy. I hope she just lacked some sleep. Or maybe she was on the withdrawal stage of meth use hence the look of drowsiness and the incoherent messages. After I left, she sent me another incoherent message. When I tried to clarify what she was trying to say and pointed out to her the incoherence because I already sensed something was not right, she didn't answer back. My question is, is an incoherent communication a possible sign of being high, or being on the withdrawal stage, of meth use? Short of having her tested, are these observations, most especially the incoherent messages, enough basis for me to take further action? I'd appreciate answers from people who have first hand experience of meth use. Thanks very much in advance. A very worried friend. |

My hubby used meth when I first started seeing him, I did not know at the time but sensed something was wrong. I remember I went over to his home and knocked on the door because we were supposed to meet some friends and go out, when he answered the door he looked like he was going to fall over, his speech was slurred and he wasn't making a bit of sense with what he was saying. He tried to make me leave by telling me he wasn't feeling well but I insisted on coming inside. I had a boyfriend when I was younger who had a father who had done meth so I was familiar with what it did and what the symptoms looked like. My hubby, was coming down from meth that he had done the night before. It sounds like to me maybe your friend got talked into doing some and she is texting you when she is coming down, meth also make people very paranoid so that could explain the weird texts too. I hope this helps hun and I wish your friend the best of luck. |

Yes, there's something obviously going on there. If she hangs out with meth users, it might seem a good idea to her to use it as well. Learn everything you can about it, talk to a drug addiction counselor, and then stage an intervention with as many friends and family as you can get. She should definitely get out of that job, too. Meth will make her look like she's 60 years old in a couple of years, her teeth will fall out, and she could die. Not a good thing. You're absolutely right to worry. Average people do not usually change to where they send incoherent messages all of a sudden. |

Approach her about your concerns...but don't come out with something like, 'Are you doing meth?' Be subtle... If you can talk to some of the other staff (if you know them)...but don't stalk her. |
